Separation of powers (trias politica) is a fundamental principle for modern states, and is devised to equally distribute responsibilities and authorities among government organs. It is used to serve as guarantee that no arm of government overpowers another arm and, as result, provides checks and balances.

About Farhan Isak Yusuf
Farhan Isak Yusuf is a researcher at Somali Public Agenda. He is also a senior lecturer and Head of Department of Political science at the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration of Mogadishu University. Farhan earned his BA & and MSc in Political Science from Mogadishu University and Omdurman University in Sudan respectively. Farhan has over eight years of experience in research and teaching at university. His major research interests include post-conflict state building, governance & good governance, state and nation building.

It is indispensable and imperative to have tolerant government and responsible opposition in Somalia working side by side within the confines of the law to help cultivate genuine reconciliation process to root out the root cause of Somali conflict, which in turn paves the way for installing stable and effective government that is capable of delivering its entrusted obligations.

I propose, adopting a limited multipartyism, which restricts the number of the political parties to three national parties with distinctive ideologies and political programs, and which between them can broadly represent all Somalis.
