ABOUT SPA CENTER FOR LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

The Center for Learning and Development is a training and capacity development facility run by Somali Public Agenda (SPA). It aims to connect the civil servants, policymakers and non-profit sector workers with communities and provide administrations with the technical skills necessary to formulate and implement solutions for public service challenges. Moreover, the center offers training to Somali professionals and university graduates who have the desire and passion to join the public sector as well as professionals engaged in the civil service and non-profit sectors.

Somali Public Agenda is a non-profit public policy and administration research organization based in Mogadishu. Its aim is to advance understanding and improvement of public administration and public services in Somalia through evidence-based research and analysis.

ABOUT THE COURSE

In this course, you will be introduced to the basic ideas behind the qualitative and quantitative research in social science. You will learn about doing literature reviews, research questions and methods; research ethics and integrity; recording/writing interview notes and writing transcripts; coding and analyzing fieldwork data, basic survey design, and writing, presenting and publishing fieldwork data (including an introduction to academic publications).

You won’t just learn how to use qualitative and quantitative methods by listening to lectures.  Through the course you will be designing your own mini research project to put some of the skills you learn into practice.

The training will last six weeks (or 45 days) and will be delivered by instructors with extensive knowledge and experience on theoretical and practical aspects of research methodology. During the course, the trainees will have the opportunity to interact with distinguished guest instructors who will be invited where they deem suitable in the training modules.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN TRAINING OBJECTIVES?

The following objectives are planned to be achieved by the end of the training:

To equip trainees with knowledge, skills and practices of qualitative and quantitative research methods;

To familiarize trainees with research design, data collection, data analysis and writing research reports;

To combat perceptions/misperception among young Somali women that research is solely a male domain;

To advance the participants’ understanding of ethical considerations in research.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

Have completed an undergraduate degree or post-graduate degree in a social science discipline

Demonstrate good command of English language both written and spoken

Be interested in developing research and analysis skills

Have time and commitment to complete course

Have basic knowledge and experience in research
