Reflections From Our Team
Somali Public Agenda
July 16, 2024
I am delighted to reflect on my three-months-long internship at the Somali Public Agenda (SPA). This experience was truly transformative and enjoyable, offering me deep insights into the world of research through the SPA Center for Learning and Development.
My internship, which took place from April 1st to June 30th, 2024, was a unique learning experience at the Somali Public Agenda. The SPA team, from the very beginning, left a lasting impression with their warm welcome, inspiring wisdom, and humility. Their support was a constant motivation for me to delve deeper into research and collaborative work.
During my internship, I was involved in various daily tasks at SPA’s finance, HR, and administrative units. One of my key responsibilities was to record, write, and share the minutes of every meeting. I also participated in research projects, which allowed me to practice and enhance my writing and research skills. I also played a significant role in organizing and planning SPA forums and taking notes. During this period, I was assigned to transcribe some focus group discussions (FGDs). Throughout the three months, I had the opportunity to complete online courses in writing and research techniques, further enhancing my capacity.
This internship experience equipped me with practical skills and knowledge that will undoubtedly benefit my future career and studies. I honed my listening and note-taking skills, which are essential for effective communication and teamwork. My time in the finance department, where I learned QuickBooks, provided me with invaluable exposure in financial management and bookkeeping. Additionally, my work in procurement and logistics department helped me develop skills in coordinating the acquisition of goods and services, negotiating contracts, and overseeing supply chains, which are all vital for efficient organizational functioning.
Finally, I express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire SPA team for this invaluable opportunity. Only some get to work and learn in such a supportive environment. I am deeply grateful for the lessons and experiences I gained with SPA during this period.
