Amina: Reflection of Three Wonderful Months: My Internship Journey with Somali Public Agenda (SPA)

Reflections From Our Team

My journey with Somali Public Agenda (SPA) began in August 2024, when I joined their Blog Writing Training. This experience opened a new world for me, helping me develop my writing skills and inspiring me to share my voice. I even wrote a blog post about it, which you can read here.

During the training, I learned about SPA’s internship program and immediately dreamed of being part of it. In December 2024, a friend told me about an open call for SPA internship applications.

I applied and was shortlisted. After completing an exam and an interview, I received the best news a week later: I had been selected to join the SPA internship program. Although my official start date was set for 1 April 2025, I was slightly worried that I might miss out on other opportunities while waiting. But luck was truly on my side.

On 1 February 2025, Ibrahim Osman, SPA’s Learning and Communications Coordinator, called to offer me an earlier start. I was overjoyed and grateful for the opportunity.

On 2 February 2025, full of excitement, I arrived early at the SPA office for my first day. The HR and Administration Officer, Idil Omar, warmly welcomed me. I will never forget how kindly she showed me around, introduced me to everyone, and explained some of the projects that SPA is working on.

My first month focused on getting to know the team and understanding SPA’s work culture. I also took several mandatory online courses on Udemy, including Microsoft 365 Fundamentals, Mastering the Art of Taking Notes, and Project Management Fundamentals. These courses, carefully selected by SPA, helped me build essential skills for the internship. I sincerely appreciate SPA’s commitment to lifelong learning and personal growth.

During my time at SPA, I worked closely with the SPA Learning Lab. I also had the opportunity to contribute to a research project about the Benadir Regional Administration (BRA) taxation system. My responsibilities included conducting interviews, taking notes during Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and transcribing the discussions. This work taught me a lot about teamwork, leadership, and how professional organizations conduct research projects.

I also had an enriching experience at the SPA library. I had access to an incredible collection of books on history, politics, literature, Somali studies, and more. I was responsible for cataloging, lending, and organizing the books, which helped me feel more connected to the learning environment.

One of the highlights of my internship was SPA Learning—the monthly book presentation program. These gatherings were held on the third Tuesday of each month, where a team member presented a book summary to the entire SPA staff. I had the privilege of being the first intern to present a book! It was an amazing opportunity to share knowledge and engage in meaningful discussions with my colleagues.

What makes SPA truly special is how much it values and promotes equality. This is especially evident in the Operations Department, where talented women lead key roles in HR and administration, finance, ICT, procurement, and cash. Working with these brilliant women gave me a deep sense of pride and showed me what respect and equality in the workplace really mean.

I worked closely with the Operations Team, whose professionalism, effective communication, and outstanding organizational skills taught me a great deal. I gained practical knowledge of administration, procurement, finance, and human resources procedures by assisting with their daily tasks. This hands-on experience helped me understand how different departments collaborate to keep operations running smoothly. Being part of such a skilled and dedicated team strengthened my teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

During the holy month of Ramadan, I had the privilege of spending time with SPA. One of the best memories was our Iftar night with colleagues. It wasn’t just about sharing a meal—it was about sharing dreams, visions, and hopes for the future. This sense of connection extended beyond Iftar; our daily lunch breaks were also filled with thoughtful conversations.

Looking back, this internship has been one of the most rewarding experiences of the year. I gained valuable professional skills, built lasting friendships, and became part of an organization that contributes significantly to the Somali community.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to SPA’s Director, Mahad Wasuge, and Deputy Director, Farhan Isak, for their support. I’m also grateful to Idil Omar, Qamar Osman, Sadia Ma’ow, Hafsa Abdirahman, Ruweido Shidane, Mohamed Adam, Ibrahim Jibril, Farhia, Aweis, Abbas Mohamed, Jacfar Mohamed, Ibrahim Osman, Maryan, Abdulkadir, and Abdirizak. Each of you played a significant role in my journey, and I am deeply thankful for your support. Thank you all.

A special thank you to Digital Shelter for introducing me to Somali Public Agenda. My time at SPA has been transformative—filled with growth, learning, and wonderful memories. I look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I gained here in my future professional journey.

No matter where life takes me, SPA will always hold a special place in my heart.

Thank you, Somali Public Agenda, for making my internship experience truly unforgettable.
