Reflections From Our Team
Somali Public Agenda
January 6, 2026

My journey with Somali Public Agenda (SPA) began long before I officially joined as an intern. In January 2023, I had the opportunity to participate in a research focus group, which introduced me to SPA’s research-driven approach to public policy. Although I was initially not eligible for an internship because I had not yet finished my university degree—which is a minimum requirement for candidates applying for this opportunity—I remained engaged by attending SPA forums and closely following the organization’s work. During this period, I also completed two advanced courses offered by SPA: Research Methods and Blog Writing. These courses further strengthened my skills and prepared me for future opportunities, laying a strong foundation for my eventual entry into the institution.
In November 2024, after completing a research course at SPA that deepened my interest in evidence-based work, I learned about SPA Learning Lab’s call for interns in December. Determined to be part of the program, I submitted my application, which led to a competitive selection process that included a written exam, a practical exam on computer basics, and an interview, designed to assess both theoretical understanding and practical capabilities. After this rigorous process, I was thrilled to be selected as an intern, which was a meaningful milestone in my journey with SPA.
On my first day, I was formally welcomed by Idil Omar from the Human Resources and Administration Department, who introduced me to SPA’s various departments and helped me settle into the organizational environment. This warm reception reflected SPA’s collaborative culture and made my transition into the internship smooth and welcoming.
The initial weeks were a period of learning, integration, and adaptation, during which I became familiar with internal processes and gradually engaged with different departments. I also completed several mandatory yet highly valuable courses offered by SPA Learning Lab, including Microsoft 365 Fundamentals, Conflict Resolution and Peace Building, Mastering the Art of Taking Notes, and Project Management Fundamentals.
These courses strengthened my technical, organizational, and analytical skills and supported my work both in-office and in research- or field-related tasks. In addition, SPA provided me with the opportunity to retake the research course that I had completed the previous year. This allowed me to refresh my knowledge, deepen my understanding, and gain practical insights that directly complemented my internship responsibilities, making my early weeks both productive and enriching.
I began my hands-on experience with the Research Department, where I took on a supportive yet meaningful role in ongoing research activities. My responsibilities primarily included transcribing interviews, taking detailed notes during Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and assisting with data collection processes. This exposure allowed me to closely observe how raw qualitative data is collected, organized, and prepared for further analysis.
Building on this foundation, I engaged with SPA Forums, including events such as the Gaxwo & Gorfeyn monthly meet-ups. My responsibilities included assisting with event organization, coordinating logistics, and taking detailed notes during discussions. This experience allowed me to observe how experts, stakeholders, and the public come together to exchange ideas on important policy issues, while also helping me develop practical skills in coordination, documentation, and attention to detail.
One of the most transformative moments of my internship came through the SPA Policy Lab, when I was given the opportunity to travel to Bosaso for a field trip alongside Aweis Ahmed, Director of the Policy Lab, and Farhia Mohamud, Researcher. What made this experience especially meaningful was that it is a limited opportunity that interns receive due to the short period they spend with the institution.
Being included in a field trip demonstrated that my contribution was valued and allowed me to witness firsthand how research translates into actionable policy recommendations. Observing policy work beyond the office, navigating real-world contexts, and coordinating with experienced professionals reshaped my understanding of public policy practice.
Throughout the journey, I was reminded of a quote that perfectly captured the experience: “Growth happens the moment you are trusted with responsibility.” Bosaso was exactly that moment for me. The conversations, shared problem-solving, and even the quiet moments during travel left a lasting impact—strengthening my professional skills while deepening my appreciation for collaboration, adaptability, and the bonds formed through meaningful work.
Simultaneously, I worked closely with the Operations Department, which includes Finance, Human Resources and Administration, Procurement, and Logistics. Through this experience, I gained insight into how administrative and operational processes underpin SPA’s work—ranging from human resource coordination and administrative support to budget management and procurement procedures, as well as planning logistics for research activities and events. This exposure reinforced my understanding of the critical role that behind-the-scenes operations play in effectively supporting both research and policy initiatives.
Reflecting on my three-month journey, I am deeply grateful to the entire SPA team for their guidance, support, and inspiration. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Mahad Wasuge, Executive Director; Farhan Isak Yusuf, Deputy Executive Director and Research Director; and Idil Omar, Qamar Osman, Sadia Ma’ow, Hafsa Abdirahman, Ruweido Shidane, Mohamed Adam, Ibrahim Jibril, Farhia Mohamud, Aweis Ahmed, Ibrahim Osman, Abukar Abdiwahab, Maryan, Abdulkadir, and Abdirizak. Each of you contributed to my growth, learning, and memorable experiences in unique ways. Your mentorship, encouragement, and collaboration have left a lasting impact, and I will carry the lessons and memories from SPA with me throughout my professional journey.
