Reflections From Our Team
Somali Public Agenda
October 1, 2025
At the beginning of my internship at Somali Public Agenda (SPA), I felt a mix of excitement and curiosity about what the next three months would bring. From the start, I was warmly welcomed by the team and introduced to the different offices of the organization. During my internship, I worked with the operations department and with SPA Research, SPA Forums, SPA Learning Lab, and SPA Policy Lab programmes, which gave me the chance to experience both the organizational and policy dimensions of SPA’s work.
My routine responsibilities included writing meeting minutes and managing the organization’s library. Through these tasks, I developed important skills in communication, documentation, and information management. Writing minutes sharpened my ability to listen carefully, capture key points, and present discussions in a structured way. Being responsible for the library taught me the value of organization and resource management. These experiences gave me a practical understanding of how small but vital roles contribute to the overall success of an institution.
During my internship, I was also fortunate to benefit from additional opportunities offered by the organization. I received a full scholarship for blog writing training, which improved my writing and communication skills. I also completed online courses in project management and climate change, both of which expanded my professional knowledge and equipped me with tools that will be useful in future career paths. These opportunities enriched my internship experience and added further value to my professional development.
In addition to these opportunities, I actively participated in the ongoing work of the organization. My involvement in the SPA Policy Lab was especially enriching, as it exposed me to research and policy discussions on governance and service delivery in Somalia. Working with colleagues on these issues not only enhanced my analytical skills but also broadened my perspective on national development and public policy.
Overall, the internship provided me with several lasting benefits. I developed new professional skills, built valuable networks, gained a clearer career direction, and increased my confidence to contribute meaningfully in a professional environment. From my first day until the final weeks, the experience was a transformative step in my career journey. I leave with gratitude for the opportunity, appreciation for the guidance of my colleagues, and determination to apply the lessons I have learned in my future endeavors.
I sincerely thank Somali Public Agenda for giving me this invaluable opportunity and for supporting my growth throughout the internship.
